Introduction:
For this assignment I will find and explore two new mobile business models from the web. One of them is www.facebook.com and the other one is www.joomla.com. Business models of Facebook and Joomla have a lot in common. Facebook is a community network business that makes money from advertising products and services on its pages as well as from the sale of digital gifts, tests and other digital products. Facebook provides a place for people to meet each other, share photos, have a diary and a chat with friends and people from all over the world. Joomla has a very interesting model that provides a free  Content Management System enabling even amateurs to quickly set up a rather sophisticated website with a blog, forum and even a chat system. It makes money from providing custom ‘skins’ (or “look” of the website) as well as some gadgets (components that provide extra functionality to the website) that make each website different and unique. 1.1 Facebook’s business model:

  1. What do they do that’s different from a regular business?

Facebook focuses on digital products and on automation to serve vast markets. There is no need for a physical office/shop for customers to call or visit.

  1. How do they manage them?

Facebook manages clients directly through its system. For instance, if customers want to order a unique digital flower from Facebook, they get to a special page, where they select the product/service, get redirected to a payment gateway, pay for the services with a credit card, and when the payment is confirmed, the system automatically dispatches a unique access code that enables customers to access the acquired product/service. Likewise, the system can automatically (after the payment is confirmed) email the digital flower to the email specified in the order form. Facebook does not really need people to keep track of multiple orders since the system does it more efficiently. The system can do the work 24/7, it does not sleep. Sometimes it can be tricked by dishonest customers and fake credit cards, yet probably there are no more fraudulent customers online than those who steal from the brick-and-mortar supermarkets (Bouwman, 2007).

  1. What are some of the hallmarks of a mobile business?

The hallmark of mobile business is its reliance on the internet, WWW, and global reach. For instance, if a customer wants to create an online photo album, he accesses a given template (on Facebook) where he only needs to upload photos and arrange them in a desired order. That newly created page is immediately saved on the server, a special counter is installed to measure the popularity of the page (number of clicks on it or visits), the page is made publicly available to the customer’s friends, guests and based on the customer’s demographics (he inputs when registering for an account in the first place) are used to put a tailored online ads on those pages. Again, the role of a human is only to oversee that the machine or algorithm (once well-developed) works fine.

1.3 Comparison between the Facebook and joomla.

Business models of Facebook and Joomla do things that are different from a regular business by focusing on online customers who use services provided by these companies. They either develop some products that can be of interest to consumers or they simply drive potential customers to certain pages of interest, where they feature external links (ads) put their for monetary reasons (Evans , 2007). The two companies manage the clients in an online mode letting the well-developed algorithm (computer) do most of the job. Once the site is set up, it provides customers with only limited degree of freedom (i.e. what they can do on the website). Some of the hallmarks of a mobile business are the automation and reliance on the machine in advertising, order processing and interaction. All the processes get down to simple commands, functions and calculations.
