I interviewed my father who has Multiple Sclerosis. He is in his Later stage of life and was diagnosed 10 years ago. He feels his stage of life (age) has had an impact on his interaction with his health care professionals. He feels his doctors didn’t listen to him years ago. he sates that he believes that a real diagnosis of MS many years ago was not an option b/c MS was mostly known as a white woman disease and he is a black male. The Neurology department at UNC Chapel Hill was most concerned with his feelings and well being. That is where he was diagnosed and other illness were ruled out like (lime disease). Wife and daughter are supportive of illness making sure I get to appointments, administering my injections, helping with my diet and exercise. He stated in the interview if it wasn’t for his support system he wouldn’t know where he would right now.
Some of his symptoms are tingling of feet and hands. Itchy feeling in his brain, temporary paralysis (6hrs at a time). He walk with a walker and cant work. He is no longer in the denial stage. Faith has kept him going thus far.
